H4H Friends, As a combat veteran, missionary work in India has been very therapeutic. In a few minutes I will walk out the door and ride down to a small campsite. The people there have been enslaved and are forced by the people who own them to do hard labor. The amount of money they make will never be enough to buy their freedom. Little do they know that their debt has already been paid. We have raised the money to set them free. My American Dream has been changing, as I get older. I have lived the most amazing life and have been blessed more than I ever deserve. ...

Wednesday, May 27, 2015 9:52 AM Dear Tom, We made it home last night around 1130. Thanks so much for inviting us to be a part of such a great weekend. We love you guys! Thanks again for an amazing weekend! Holidays for Heroes has got it right! Nowadays, the greatest form of therapy is being around like-minded folks and being able to open up and be yourself. I was able to get away from my normal routine and day-to-day business and take my family with me to spend Memorial Day weekend in Nantucket! There's no better place to be and no better time to be there. Yes, ...

Nantucket Health Club, Dave Schultz

In 2013, with Holidays for Heroes (H4H) leading the way, the Nantucket community was able to provide an all-inclusive summer getaway for a number of wounded veterans and their families. Nantucket Health Club (NHC) saw an opportunity to give back to the men and women who have done so much to defend our country.  We were able to partner with H4H and turn our annual July 4th Firecracker 5K into a fund raising event for H4H. As important as the fundraising aspect of the race was, the awareness that it brought to the community and the participants was even more important. ...

When I was asked to write a letter about the Holidays for Heroes events last summer, in my opinion one of the more important, if not the most important event that has taken place on this island in some time.  My mind started to shift into high gear with all the great memories shared with the Nantucket community and the generous people lucky enough to attend the Gala.  No one except a very few select individuals would be so profoundly affected by the attention given to our brave men and women that have served our country. This small but influential committee lead by ...

Patrick Topham, Sgt. USMC

In March of 2013 Tom McCann came to my office needing a little help - he needed someone to help arrange flights for the warriors coming to Nantucket for the Holidays for Heroes July 4th celebration. Tom has been my parent's next door neighbor for over 20 years and I had never seen him, let alone met him. Not knowing Tom's power of persuasion I told him I would do my best to help. As a Marine Corps Veteran of both Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm I had always avoided involvement in any kind of outreach or veterans groups. I guess it was the effects of ...

FIGAWI 2013

To the residents of Nantucket, My name is Kyle Cornwell and I was one of the wounded warriors invited to race in the FIGAWI Regatta representing Holidays for Heroes. I wanted to write this letter to express my deepest gratitude for the hospitality and the warm welcome we were met with upon our arrival.  I was born and raised in Northern California so I never got a chance to really see your part of the country.  In fact I had to Google Nantucket just to see where it was. I was completely blown away when our sailboat arrived at the harbor.  There were hundreds of ...

A Surprise Nantucket Wedding

Jeff and Christie Lynch were married hastily by a JP in 2004, just days before his deployment.  She never got to wear the gown she’d chosen for their planned wedding day. Jeff was injured two years later, during his last few days in Iraq. He suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and major abdominal injuries. Under diagnosed, he was re-deployed and injured again in 2007, this time suffering a second TBI and a minor stroke. Eventually medivacked to Walter Reed Hospital, where Jeff and his wife of four years remained until late 2008, when their son was born, and ...

Letter to the Editor of the Inquirer Mirror

BJ Ganem, who recently visited Nantucket with his wife Sara and young son Knox, wrote this beautiful email to Marion Stanton, editor of the Inquirer Mirror. We are thankful to BJ and his family for their participation in the Nantucket experience, and we hope to be able to create many more memories for our wounded heroes. June 5, 2014 Dear Editor, Last month, my family and I had the opportunity to spend a week on Nantucket experiencing much of the unique offerings of the island, as well as, the Figawi Race and festival. I am 37 years old and I was catastrophically ...

Patriot Choice Inspections & my new family on Nantucket Island – James Sheehan

Two years ago I was in my yard in Kansas City doing some landscaping with my wife when I received a phone call from a random number in Connecticut. Usually I don’t answer these types of calls, however I was landscaping and I thought that this would give me a nice little break from bending over the countless flower beds. On the other side of the line was Tom McCann, a man in which I would grow quite fond of in the months to come. I had a troubled childhood and a rough four years in the Marine Corps with being injured in Afghanistan. My whole life I felt like I was working ...
