Brian joined the Marine Corps in December 2001. He was stationed in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii with 1st Battalion 3rd Marines. Brian was deployed to Fallujah, Iraq in 2004 as a part of Operation Phantom Fury. While on top of an assault amphibious vehicle (AAV), an improvised explosive device was detonated resulting in the amputation of his right arm and leg. Brian was brought to the Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland before being transferred to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. for recovery and physical therapy. Brian received a full medical discharge in August 2006.
