I enlisted on Feb 7, 2011. Six months later I was stationed with 1st Battalion, 8th Marines, an infantry unit in NC. At the very beginning of January 2012, we deployed to Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Being in the desert again agreed with me, and I was determined to make the most of my time there.
Unfortunately, on Feb 9, while on a dismounted patrol with my squad, an insurgent triggered an IED (improvised explosive device) that was buried in a wall next to me. As a result, I lost both on my legs and most of the function of my right arm. After more than 30 surgeries later, I'm still alive and kicking (figuratively, haha.).
God has blessed me in many ways since my injury. The two most obvious ways are my involvement in a band of wounded warriors called MusiCorps, and my marriage to the most remarkable woman I've ever met. Kelly Fidler and I were married on Nantucket Island in May of 2015. I couldn't be happier.
